Your family members? Or maybe it’s the voice inside your head, that tells you to give up or to wait a little longer until you are ready to make your dreams a reality?

There are always people who can or have more. People, who are in better places or more beneficial positions.

The man who wins is the one who thinks he can.

One should not wait for the opportunity to knock at your door. It doesn’t matter if you want to become an entrepreneur, a famous author or a musician.  The most successful people are those who create their own opportunities. They are the hand that knocks on their door.

If you are born poor, it’s not your fault. But if you die poor, it is your fault. ~ Bill Gates

The words of Bill Gates may sound hard and controversial at first.  This is especially so because the founder of Microsoft didn’t actually start at the very bottom. Despite the fact that his first company  Traf-O-Data failed, he has never experienced real poverty in his life.

So Gates maxim may be easy to say, but certainly hard to do. However, this is a great thought to keep in mind.  If you hear that demotivating voice in your head once again then you should use these five inspiring rags to riches stories of people who achieved a great success.

Rags To Riches Stories That Will Win Your Heart

1.Sam Walton

Commit to your business. Believe in it more than anybody else.

rags to riches stories

The founder of Walmart came from very humble beginnings.  He was born and bred on a farm. He helped his family financially by milking their cows, then bottling the milk and driving it out to customers. He delivered newspapers on a paper route as well. During college, he waited tables in exchange for meals. Next, he was inducted into the military for service in World War II.

His life wasn’t all roses… At 26, he purchased a Ben Franklin variety store with the help of a $20,000 loan from his father-in-law, plus $5,000 of his savings. He expanded the chain with the help of his brother, and then went on to found Walmart – the world’s largest company in terms of revenue.

By 2015, Walton’s net worth already exceeded $100 billion. Sam Walton died in 1998 but the started-from-the-bottom story of a boy who delivered milk and newspapers around the village still inspires thousands of people worldwide.  The first of our rags to riches stories.

2. Li Ka-shing

I wasn’t lucky. I worked hard to achieve the goals I set for myself.

5 rag to riches stories

Li Ka-shing is known to be one of the richest men in Asia and the chairman for CK Hutchison Holdings. But there are only few who know his early life and how he started off… Li Ka-shing is our second rags to riches story and he started life by making plastic decorations.

As a 15-year-old boy, Li quitted school to work in plastics factory to support his mother after his father’s death. He worked 16 hours a day and sent 90% of his salary to his mother. In 1950, he opened his first factory with funds borrowed from relatives.  The factory was called Cheung Kong Industries and manufactured plastic flowers. Although it took a few years, Cheung Kong went on to become the largest plastic flower factory in Asia.

The company later moved into real estate. Soon, Li Ka-shing became a magnet. He diversified and became the owner of many other companies. Today, he employs more than 270,000 people in 52 countries and is the richest man in Hong Kong, This, despite the fact that he has never even received a university degree.

Li Ka-Shing a definite inspiration for our rags to riches stories.

3. Oprah Winfrey

You get in life what you have the courage to ask for.

rags to riches stories

When talking about heartening tales, it’s difficult not to mention the humble beginnings of the Queen of talk shows. Oprah is probably the most famous of our rags to riches stories.

Oprah makes no secret of the fact that she was born to an unmarried teenage mother, who worked as a housemaid. Thereupon, she experienced extreme poverty as a child.

Today Oprah can afford any stunning dress for red carpet galas.  However, as a little girl, she was bullied by her peers because she wore clothes made of potato sacks.

She was also hit with a stick by her grandmother, whenever she forgot to do her housework.

If poverty was not enough to endure, Oprah had to live with battering.  It was not uncommon for her to get a thrashing from her grandmother if she just as forgot to do her homework.

Who would believe that today’s television guru started by reciting Bible verses in a church at the age of 4? Who would even think that she used to be abused by her mother’s relatives including her cousin, uncle and a family friend at age of 9? Who would make a second guess that she ran away from home when she was just 13? And Oprah has had to deal with much loss.  She lost her two sisters and also her own child later on in life.  Yet she perseveres.

Her first success was getting a full scholarship to Tennessee State University after she won an oratory competition. Then she started working in the local black radio station called WVOL.BlueHost

Now she is best known not for her difficult past, but for the highest-rated daytime talk show in American TV history, dubbed “The Oprah Winfrey Show”. It is estimated that she is currently worth 3,1 billion USD.

4. Do Wong Chang

You can’t go into business thinking that success will come to you in just one or two years.

rags to riches stories

Do Wong Chang can be undoubtedly called one of the most successful American immigrants. The first days in the USA didn’t look like American Dream. He usually worked 19 hours per day. He started working the day after he took the leap across the Pacific straight from South Korea. No waste of time for our fourth rags to riches stories.

He admits that he worked three jobs at a time in order to survive. His minimum wage was around $3 per hour. There was no work he would refuse – he washed dishes, prepared meals in a coffee shop’s kitchen and also worked at a gas station. Meanwhile, his wife worked as a hairdresser. Next, he started a small service cleaning houses.

So how did he come up with the idea of Forever 21, the 5th hugest specialty retailer in the US?

Actually, Do Wong Chang, while working at a gas station, asked the drivers of the nicest cars where they worked. It turned out that many of them were working in the garment industry.  This inspired him to make his own clothing store later on in life.

In 1984, he opened his first store, which hit a turnover of  $700,000 in its first year. Today, Do Wong Chang employs 43,000 people in nearly 800 stores in 48 countries and can be found in the 400 list of the wealthiest Americans.

5. Shania Twain

I’d rather die standing than live on my knees.

rags to riches stories

“Life’s about joy, life’s about pain”, sings Shania Twain in her song titled “Life’s all about to get all better” Shania certainly experienced both joy and pain in her life.

Twain grew up girl with indigent parents in Timmins. She not only suffered from the scarcity of food in her home but also repeatedly saw her parents fighting. Despite the horrendous fear in her heart, she had to learn how to hunt and chop wood.

Her young life sounds like a sad tale that is told children before they go to sleep. In reality, this is how Shania Twain’s really was before the world had ever heard her voice.

At the age of just 8, Shania took up singing in bars in order to pay her family’s bills. When she was 15, she worked with her father in his reforestation business – she walked miles a day and carried heavy loads of trees.

Soon, she started taking vocal lessons and cleaned the house of her vocal coach in payment. In 1984, her talent was noticed by Toronto DJ Stan Campbell, who took her to Nashville to record some records.

Shania has already sold more than 90 million records, which makes her the best-selling female pop-country artist of all time. It’s crucial to add that she has also received five Grammy Awards and she is the only female artist in history to have three consecutive albums certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America.

This is Shania Twain’s rags to riches story.  And what are you going to make of your story?  Have any of these real life successes inspired you to look inside yourself and find your assets?
